John 7: 14-24
(John 7: 14-24)
Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
And the Jews marvelled,
saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? Jesus answered them, and said, My
doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall
know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. He that speaketh of himself seeketh
his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true,
and no unrighteousness is in him. Did
not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye
about to kill me? The
people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? Jesus answered and said unto them, I
have done one work, and ye all marvel. Moses therefore gave unto you
circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the
sabbath day circumcise a man. If
a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not
be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on
the sabbath day? Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous
judgment.
In the middle
of the Feast of Booths, we can see Jesus struggling against Jews who groan and
distrust Jesus' authority and identity. The reason they do not believe in Jesus
is recorded in John 5:18, ``Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him,
because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his
Father, making himself equal. with God. 』
The reason for
the deepening of the conflict with the Jews is that he cured the sick on the
Sabbath and at the same time blasphemed God as his father. As such, the Jews
who were prejudiced at the same time as amazement at the words and work of
Jesus ask questions with a resentful attitude. “This
man did not learn, how do you know the writing?” Jesus
answered. “Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent
me.” Jesus did not try to reveal his power through his
teaching. He revealed the God who sent him.
『He
that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory
that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. After
Chapter 5, a deep valley between the Jews and Jesus was gradually deepening.
Jesus healed the sick on the Sabbath, and because of this, Jesus did not obey
the law. He even introduced himself, saying that it was God who sent him. The
sin of blasphemy was aggravated. The Jews believed that Jesus should be
punished for not observing the Sabbath and even blaspheming.
In response,
Jesus turned to the Jews, saying, "Moses therefore gave unto you
circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the
sabbath day circumcise a man. 』The Jews
practice circumcision on the eighth day after a boy is born. It didn't matter
whether the eighth day was a weekday or a sabbath. Even when breaking the
Sabbath, a small part of the boy is cut out with a knife. Through this, it
proclaims that it is the saved people of God, the chosen people.
The point
that Jesus is saying is that on the eighth day after birth, even on the
Sabbath, the Jewish boys cut off a small part of their bodies with swords and
proclaimed them as a saved people and rejoiced together, and the man who had
been lying sick for 38 years at the Bethesda pond was healed and retired. I
took it and walked, but can't we please together? On the contrary, he rebuked
him, asking if he would drive him to death just because he was healed on the
Sabbath. And he said, "Do not judge by your appearance, but judge
justly."
