John 6:14-21

(John 6:14-21)

Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.  When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.  And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea, And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.  And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.  So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.  But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.  Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

Those who saw the sign and followed Jesus finally experienced a marvelous sign. They believed in Jesus as a prophet like Moses predicted in Deuteronomy 18 and tried to make him their king. They believed that Jesus would bring about political liberation, economic revival, and social justice. They believed that Jesus would make their dreams come true, and they believed that it was the answer to their prayers.

However, Jesus did not respond to their demands. Jesus, who ruled the waves and walked on the water, did not reject their demands because of lack of power. It's not because they hate giving humans freedom as a gift, fulling, and liberation. Jesus' thoughts and their thoughts were different. The Jews, who followed Jesus and saw countless signs, only wanted more power from Jesus than Jesus himself. They believed that if they made Jesus king, their life would be better, they believed that suffering and suffering would disappear, and that any disease would heal. However, this belief is not a belief from heaven. This belief is nothing more than a blind faith that is no different from the idolatrous attitude of pagans to expand their wealth and prosperity through Jesus and ensure affluent life.

So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. The darkness still shows that the disciples cannot escape from the net of the law. The blowing of the wind, causing waves, reveals that we will escape the law and be guided by the Holy Spirit. The same expression is used in Matthew 14:22-36.

When the disciples saw him walk over the sea, they were surprised and cried out in fear, saying he was a ghost. Peter left the boat and walked on the water. The ship represents Christ. The start of the ship is Noah's ark. Since the ark is a sign of salvation, it symbolizes Jesus Christ. Here, the sea does all the law. So Jesus, who walked on the water, shows that he is above the law.
