John 15: 1-17
(John 15: 1-17)
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not
fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that
it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have
spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot
bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye
abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth
in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can
do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a
branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and
they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask
what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father
glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As
the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall
abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in
his love. These things
have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy
might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have
loved you. Greater love
hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever
I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not
what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have
heard of my Father I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen me, but I have
chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that
your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my
name, he may give it you. These things I command you, that ye love one another.
This is what
Jesus teaches his disciples through the parable of the vine. 『I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in
me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit,
he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the
word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch
cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye,
except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches:'Jesus is the true
vine, God is the farmer, and the saints are the branches.
Many times in the Old
Testament, parables of this kind are recorded. Among them, the most representative
part of Isaiah 5:1-7 is 『Now will I sing to my
wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a
vineyard in a very fruitful hill: And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones
thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst
of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring
forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes. And now, O inhabitants of
Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.
What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it?
wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth
wild grapes? And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I
will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the
wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down: And I will lay it waste: it shall
not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will
also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. For the vineyard of the
LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant:
and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but
behold a cry.』
The vine
became a symbol of the Israelites, but Jesus teaches that the vineyard was
desolate. It is a warning from Jesus that the vine has not produced fragrant
grapes, has become a useless wild grape, is a vain grape, and has fallen into a
useless state.
But Jesus says that because he is a true vine, a true and pure vine, he cannot
produce any fruit properly unless he is attached to him. He teaches as a
warning that God the Father, who is a farmer, removes and burns all branches of
vines that do not bear fruit.
It means that they are not saved by the fact that they are Jews because they
are not producing fruit by lineage or nationality. These words are shocking
words to the Jews who were obsessed with the idea that they were God's chosen
people. If it applies to us today, it means that attending church and believing
in Jesus does not mean that we are saved, but that we are truly Christians only
when we are attached to Jesus Christ. To be attached to Christ, we must be
united with the cross of Jesus.
『 If a man abide not in
me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and
cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will,
and it shall be done unto you. 』
