John 14: 15-31
(John 14: 15-31)
If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he
shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the
world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye
know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I
will come to you. Yet a
little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye
shall live also. At that
day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and
keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of
my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot,
Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the
world? Jesus answered and
said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love
him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my
sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent
me. These things have I
spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy
Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and
bring all things to
your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave
with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.
Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I
go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I
said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come
to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. Hereafter I will not
talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in
me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave
me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
Before Jesus was
crucified, he asked his disciples. The disciples thought that Jesus would
always be with them, but Jesus told them, "If you love me, you will keep
my commandments." The commandment of Jesus is love. This is to say to love
God and to love our neighbors. In John 13:34-35, Jesus said:『 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love
one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are
my disciples, if ye have love one to another. 』
These words are about the Spirit. It is to express love for God when the dead
spirit comes to life and is born again, and to save the spirit of the neighbor
is also to love the neighbor. Jesus loved all mankind because he died on the
cross. However, there must be the death of the cross before love. The death on
the cross is God's justice. Love without justice is no love. Love that does not
take up its own cross is also empty. So, Jesus denies himself and asks him to
bear his cross.
Jesus promises to
give you new grace. Another Comforter, the Holy Spirit, will come and testify.
Jesus, who had been with his disciples until now, left them. Jesus must be
arrested, crucified, entered the tomb, and resurrected and ascended. After a
while, the disciples will not be able to be with Jesus as they have been. The
disciples who heard this were also embarrassed, but because Jesus had a body,
they were limited in the activities of time and space, but when the Holy
Spirit, the Comforter, came, the disciples could act and a greater work could
take place.
“The
kingdom of God is in you” The word “in you” has two meanings. First, it means
that you are in a person's mind. These words are spoken of the Holy Spirit who
dwells in the repentant and born again. In the Old Testament it was said that
God is in a sanctuary or a temple. Sinners could not meet God. So, sinners
could meet indirectly through sin offerings and priests. However, since Jesus
Christ came to God as a priest at the same time as a sin offering, it becomes
God's temple to those who are united with Jesus.
In 1 Corinthians
3:16, ``Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God
dwelleth in you? 』The Holy Spirit spoken here is
called the Spirit of salvation. When the Holy Spirit of God is inherent in a
believer, that person is called God's people. The people with the Holy Spirit
dwelling in the hearts of men become the kingdom of God. So, the saints can
worship directly. John 4:20-24『 Our fathers worshipped
in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to
worship. Jesus saith unto
her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this
mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know
what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when
the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the
Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship
him must worship him in spirit and in truth. 』
Second, it means that
people are in a gathered relationship (with), which means ``God is in the
middle of where two or three people are gathered,'' which speaks of the
sovereignty of the kingdom of God. In Matthew 18:15-20『 Moreover if thy brother
shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him
alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he will not hear thee, then
take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses
every word may be established. And
if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to
hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. Verily
I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and
whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say unto you, That if two of
you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be
done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are
gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. 』
