John 10: 22-42

 (John 10: 22-42)

And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.  And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch. Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.  Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.  But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.  My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.  I and my Father are one.  Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.  Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?  The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?  If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;  Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?  If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.  But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.  Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,  And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode. And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.  And many believed on him there.

And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter. . At the feast of Israel in winter, the feast of the dedication, Jesus ascended to Jerusalem. the feast of the dedication is a feast commemorating the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. In 167 BC, Antiochus IV, who ruled Israel, sacrificed a dead pig, considered unclean by the law, on the temple altar in Jerusalem to convert the temple in Jerusalem into a Greek temple as part of Israel's Greekization policy. This led to the recapture of the temple and the struggle for independence, centered on Maccabi, on the back of the angry Israelites. This resulted in the recapture of the temple and restoration of the temple worship in 164 BC, three years later, and the feast of the dedication is a holiday celebrating this.

During the feast of the dedication, an Israeli holiday commemorating the restoration of the temple, Jesus was walking in the temple of Solomon. The Hall of Solomon is located on the east side of the courtyard of the Gentiles, where people first meet after entering the temple. There were pillars standing there and the roof was covered, so when he entered the temple, Jesus spoke mainly with the people and taught the Word. This was an area where Gentiles could enter, so anyone who feared God could come and hear Jesus' words. When he came to the temple, Jesus and his disciples often stopped by. It was also a place where the apostles and believers gathered together even after the ascension of Jesus (Acts 5:12).

Then the Jews asked Jesus. Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. A group of Jews decided and surrounded Jesus. Then they ask Jesus to clearly answer their questions. Jesus answered them, "Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.

Jesus clearly replied that you do not believe even though he said he was the Christ. After hearing the answer, the surrounding Jews tried to raise the stone again. Even though Jesus made it clear that he was the Christ, people considered him to be blasphemy and tried to stone him to death. People asked Jesus and they tried to kill him in response to Jesus' answer. The question is nothing more than a trap that tries to drive Jesus to death, a trap disguised as a question. It wasn't just a question, it was a trap to justify their actions. These efforts are revealing that this was not the first time.
